Mrs. Robbins' class made "Light Sabers" for yesterday's Star Wars Day - May the 4th! Mrs. Robbins sent two different colored bulbs to each student. Students compared colors and experimented what happened when both bulbs were on the battery at the same time! Afterward the students wrote in their journals: "I made a light saber!" They also drew pictures of the three things you need to make them.

Good Morning VES parents, Happy Friday and Happy May Day! Thank you for those of you who came through the pickup line at VES yesterday to retrieve your student's belongings, get their workbook for May (K-3rd), and return complete student work. If you did not come through the line yesterday, it's important that you come to VES any weekday from 9:00-1:00 and ring the doorbell at the front door. A VES staff member will bring you your student's belonging and workbook and collect any student work you have to return. Also, PreK parents - We did not make a May time log for you. If you would please just write your daily time/activities spent on work down on a sheet of paper for the May dates, that will suffice. I want to give a big shout out to Karen Downs, PreK of Fayette County director, for the goodie bags that she prepared for each student at VES. This bag had a jump rope, book, crayons, etc. in it and we were able to place the Lifetouch pictures and student workbook nicely into the bag. She worked very hard to get all of those bags prepared and we appreciate her time and effort. If your student has a library book at home, that absolutely needs to be returned to the school as soon as possible as well. Please continue to reach out to me or your child's teacher if you have questions or concerns. Mrs. Mesnard, Principal

The Governor has announced we will continue Remote Learning for the remainder of the 19-20 school year. Next week our meal distribution will change to M, W, F still providing the same number of meals. We will continue to work as a team & get through this together. #VandalStrong
Very important - The next mass distribution date will be Tuesday, April 14 from 9:00-12:00 and 3:00-6:00 in the VES circle drive. This will include work for April 14-30. This will be for PreK, K, and 1st grades. 2nd and 3rd grade will continue to do Google Classroom via their Chromebooks. If you are a 2nd or 3rd grade parent who has contacted your child's teacher previously to have a paper packet made for your child, your teacher will make a paper packet for your child this time as well, and it will be available for pickup on this date as well. To summarize this, all PreK, K, and 1st need to come and get a paper packet. 2nd and 3rd only need to get a paper packet if you have made arrangements to that effect with your child's teacher because you do not have internet access.
We are running 20-30 minutes behind on the rural bus route deliveries for food today. Be patient, and we will see you soon. 😁
Attention to all who receive our meals: We are doing a mass distribution Wednesday for meals over Spring Break. It is very important that you pick up your meals or are avaiable when we deliver. This includes 8 meals for the break. We will resume service on April 14th.
The following email is from Lifetouch - I reached out to them to inquire about how they are handling the Spring Pictures at VES. This is their response. Naturally we are all facing an unprecedented situation and we will do our best to adapt to things as they change. Currently, some of our production facilities are operating at capacity. However, because Illinois is a shelter in place state, the shipments are now coming to our office - which is closed as we are a non-essential business. So we are doing our best to manage with a skeleton crew and will be sorting and shipping once we are given the all clear. As for Spring Pictures and Yearbooks -- I just wanted you to know we are working to come up with plan a, b and/or c for the delivery and distribution of both. At this point, of course we are hoping everyone can be back in school before the end of the year, but if not, rest assured everyone who ordered will get their order. Even if we have to ship the items to students' homes at our expense of course. I will keep you posted and we will work together to make the best decision for all when we know more. In the meantime, we share our best wishes for your safety and well-being, and for that of your families and school community. Thanks Dustin Chapman Account Manager | School Photography & Yearbooks Central Illinois | 3920 Pintail Dr. | Springfield, IL 62711
As previously sent in email and posted on the VES Facebook, there will be a mass distribution of paper materials for students to work on during the school closure period from March 31-April 7. This will occur on Tuesday, March 31 from 9:00-12:00 and 3:00-6:00 in the VES circle drive. Please stay in your car through the circle drive and a VES staff member will hand you your child's materials. We will not be accepting paper materials and the log that you will have completed by then as we do not want to take in any materials from the outside due to health and safety reasons. When the school closure is complete you will be turning in all the completed materials and time logs at one time. This distribution of materials will include PreK through 2nd grade. Since 3rd grade is mostly working through Google Classroom via their Chromebooks, the parents of 3rd graders do not need to come to this mass distribution unless you have made special arrangements to get a paper packet with your child's specific teacher ahead of time The 3rd grade teachers will continue to provide assignments and instruction via the Google Classroom. If you have questions please email your child's teacher or Mrs. Mesnard at email@example.com
Good afternoon VES students, parents, and staff, I hope you all had a great weekend and spent time with your family safely inside your house, at least for the most part. My teachers and I have received your emails and phone calls and have been happy to respond when one of you needs help. This elearning is definitely different than what we are used to, but it's also been interesting and rewarding in many ways. Many of you wrote me messages on Facebook in response to my video and I thank you for reaching out. I will try to do a video every few days so that we can stay in touch. When we originally sent home materials (on Monday, March 16) we sent home enough to last through March 30. Now that we know the school closure is mandated through April 7, we need to get some more materials in your hands. My teachers will be spending this week preparing those materials and continuing to prepare lessons in Google Classroom and online at a variety of websites. The following information is so that you will know how to get those materials from us as well as a few other important details. Tuesday, March 24-April 7- the VES office will be open from 10:00-1:00 daily. Mr. Emerick, Miss Terri, Miss Lori, and myself will be available during those hours for questions. Of course you can always email any VES staff member at any time of the day and we will respond to your question as soon as possible. Tuesday, March 31 - There will be a mass distribution of paper materials from 9:00-12:00 and 3:00-6:00 from the circle drive at VES. A VES staff member will hand you the materials for your child from the front door of VES. This includes PreK-3rd grade. I will see you on March 31! Until then, remember not to get bogged down by the amount of hours you are spending on the assignments. Just make sure you do some Reading, Writing, and Math each day and if your children are enjoying the online games and activities, by all means, let them play them as those games are educational as well as entertaining. - Mrs. Mesnard, VES Principal
VES Students, Teachers, and Parents, I want to let you know that you can also contact our VES Technology teacher Mrs. Donaldson is you have questions about your elearning. She can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org.

VES is fundraising to purchase Buddy Benches in memory of Jenna Protz and Holly Lidy. A buddy bench aims to end loneliness and foster friendship and kindness. A buddy bench allows students who do not have a playmate to come sit on the buddy bench and the other children are encouraged to include the student on the bench in their play group. This is a perfect way to memorialize the kind and loving girls Jenna and Holly were to everyone. Vandalia Correctional Center donated a Buddy Bench to VES in memory of Jenna and Holly and it is VES’ goal to purchase three more so one can be placed at the Junior High, High School, and Jefferson School. Below is a picture of what the buddy benches will look like. VES students are invited to participate in the following activities to raise money for the Buddy Benches: Friday February 7, 2020- Hat Day- pay $.50 to wear a hat at school Thursday February 13, 2020- Wacky Sock Day- pay $.50 to have wear wacky socks at school Friday February 21, 2020- Pajama Day- pay $.50 to wear pajamas to school Friday February 28, 2020- Twin Day- pay $.50 to dress like your buddy (classmate) Please feel free to contact Miss Bennett if you have any questions. If you are available for any of these slots please let Mrs. Mesnard know.
